Top Five Travel Trends for 2023

With Travel ‘Back to Normal’ What Fashions and Destinations are Popular in 2023

Travel bounced back with a vengeance – and it will be interesting to see how travel trends develop in 2023.

We all paid the rip-off prices to get away after a couple of years of restrictions. With the price of living higher, will there be enough cash left over for a getaway in 2023? With the desire to travel as strong as ever, I will not be betting against it.

After scouring the usual PR pieces from firms with a vested interest in relieving you of your cash, here are the consistent travel trends for the year ahead.

It will be interesting to see how many of these have come true at the end of the year. While much of it depends on the economy (worldwide one, not just the UK), there is little doubt that the desire to travel is still there.

Five Travel Trends for 2023

#1 – Working from Home (Home Away from Home)

Travel while working used to be the remit of a niche group of nomads.

These days, people in jobs for large and mid-sized companies are working remotely. With your location less important as the quality of work you produce, travel opportunities are now possible.

Some remote workers spend the winter months in warmer climates. Others take short breaks, swapping their daily commute for breath-taking scenery – and their after-work gym session for a run on the beach.

With the novelty of WFH gone, more and more people will take advantage of their new location independent lifestyle opportunities.

Budget 2023 Travel

#2 – Traveling on a Budget in 2023

At least one big travel website noted that searches for budget hotels are trending upwards.

This should not come as a big surprise. Obviously, the cost-of-living crisis is reducing the discretionary spend for everyone. While we would all like to stay five-star, fly business and eat in Michelin starred restaurants – the proverbial belts need tightening.

Three-star hotels can be wonderful. They are smaller and have fewer facilities than the four- and five-star equivalents. However, get a friendly owner, great staff and comfortable rooms, and your travel experience can be even better than the faceless corporate giants.

#3 – Wellness Holidays are Hot in 2023

Physical and mental health can be boosted while you enjoy a holiday.

Yoga and meditation retreats have been around for decades. What was once the remit of hippies* and new age types is now attracting people from all walks of life. You can return home from holiday feeling mentally boosted – and with a clearer idea of what makes you happy.

Fitness holidays work for both adults and children – with more activities than ever available. The latest cruise ships have running tracks. Regular beach holidays now have sports and adventure tours – great for burning off those full English breakfasts.

*and let’s face it, nobody trusts a hippy!

Tour de France and Famous French Sport Events

#4 – Nostalgic Holidays

Booking.com reported a huge number of people replying to their survey craved nostalgic travel for 2023.

With so much of travel booked electronically, with experiences, novelty, and luxury key ingredients – the idea is a return to simpler times. Ideas for nostalgic travel include simple beach breaks, train journeys or even multi-generational trips.

Obviously, nostalgia means different things depending on the individual. That said, the tour companies should be aware that competing on novelty and complexity is not the only way to get those bookings.

Horseshoe Falls at Niagara

#5 – Sustainable Travel is Big in 2023

Sustainable travel has been around for years.

As more younger travellers (especially gen Z) have money to take trips, those that take the environment into consideration are increasingly popular. Just about all airlines now allow you to offset your carbon emissions. Add to this eco-holidays, especially those that boost local communities rather than fill the coffers of large corporates – and you can see this trend continues to develop.
