Good news: hand luggage restrictions on liquids when flying will soon be a thing of the past.
I’m old enough to remember pre-911 days, when liquids in carry on luggage were normal. For more than 20 years, we have been restricted to under 100ml – and had to separate those liquids into clear bags for the screening process.
Technology has improved to the point of making restrictions on liquids unnecessary.
That same technology means that separating your electronics won’t be needed.
All you need to do is avoid those clueless first-time flyers, and airport security will be far easier from June 2024 onwards.
Liquids in Hand Luggage: CT Technology from 2024
The UK and USA are leading the way with new security scanners.
While older tech used x-rays, the new CT scanners are far more powerful. They not only get the shape of objects in your carry-on, but they can also algorithmically detect the chemical composition too.
Flammable liquids or explosive are detected fast. Meaning that our drinks, sunscreen, and cosmetics wiz through. This not only speeds up the line, but it also means you won’t lose that expensive sunscreen if you pack too big a bottle by mistake.
The new deadline for all UK airports is June 2024.
You’ll then be able to take 2-litres of liquids, instead of the current 100ml.
Electronics: New Scanner Technology
Separating your electronics will also be unnecessary when the new scanners are fully operational.
Laptops, tablets and other devices currently need their own tray. While business and frequent travellers know the routine, this leads to fumbling and delays for infrequent travellers – backing up the queues at security.
The new CT scanners in airports will have a better view of your electronics. By detecting anything amiss or hidden in them, those extra trays and delays will become a thing of the past.
What Will Not Change?
I’m excited by these changes, which will unblock a real pinch-point at the airport – especially during those peak holiday getaway times.
That said, there are many things which will not change.
You’ll still need to remove your jacket and larger shoes / boots.
You’ll still need to get that belt off and empty your pockets. If you are a conscientious traveller, you’ll prepare while standing in the line. We all know that multiple people will get to the front of the queue then look like slightly surprised rabbits when asked to use the trays…
New 2024 Airport Scanners: Rest of the World
The UK and North America are leading the way, with Europe sure to catch up soon.
That leaves a lot of world without the new scanner technology. Security of travellers must come first, and it will be at least five years before every airport has the new CT scanners.
You will need to be aware of the rules for your return flights.
It would be easy to lose those liquids if you get it wrong. For me, that means assuming the restrictions are still in place – unless there is clear information that the new rules apply.
Wrapping Up: Technology is Making Flying Easier – Now Do Your Part
Alongside electronic passport gates, this new hand luggage scanning technology is another big plus for travellers.
Faster and less stressful processing at the airport benefits everyone.
What the technology won’t help with is unprepared people.
It is up to everyone to get ready to move quickly through security while you are waiting in the line.
I have developed a ‘Spidey sense’ for the types to cause these delays, and make sure I join an alternative queue even if it is longer!
Here is looking forward to technology making our travel easier.
