Delsey Luggage – Every Hard-Shell and Soft-Shell Suitcase Compared

Delsey Paris Luggage: Detailed Review and Comparisons

I’m a huge fan of Delsey luggage – they combine practical suitcases with elegant designs in a way that other travel brands just can’t match.

Whether you love the timeless retro hard-shell design, the ultra-modern yet chic newer ranges or something understated yet high quality – Delsey Paris is the luggage brand to try.

All that said, we need to make sure that the price tag matches the quality. We need to know that the practical elements of check-in, hand luggage and accessory cases works flawlessly. And we need to know that Delsey Luggage will last.

My Delsey Paris Luggage review covers all these questions.

You’ll also find a features list, feedback from multiple long-term users and alternatives to Delsey cases below.

Mini-Reviews: Your Options in the Delsey Luggage Range

#1 Delsey Chalet Air 2.0 Luggage – Retro Elegance

Delsey Paris Iconic Range - the Chalet / Chalet Air 2.0Chalet Air suitcases are the iconic range from Delsey Paris.

The style is instantly retro, yet the curves, details and materials are 100% modern. This is the best-selling model and comes in different sizes and styles – including an updated 2.0 option and thinner, taller ‘trunk’ models.

Staying with the checked-in originals, you can choose from 24-inch or 28-inch (61cm / 71cm approx.). These are spinners, with small yet tough double wheels along with telescoping handles which match the style perfectly. You can choose from Champagne White, Chocolate Brown or Black.

Chalet Air cases are hard shell, with a 100% polycarbonate build. You get two retro-designed handles, and a double zip which locks (with TSA override). The smaller one weights 4.22kg. That is reasonable – though not in the lightweight category.

Those curved lines across the front, with a central logo work wonderfully with the overall retro theme.

Check out this page at amazon.co.uk now for the impressive close-ups and latest price!

Options within the Delsey Chalet Air Luggage Range

Along with the two checked-in hard shell options covered above, you will find these options within the retro Chalet Air range:

  • 80cm Version: This is stunning, with a taller and more narrow profile it will turn heads at the airport.
  • 55cm Chalet Air: You’ll find checked-in options in the Chalet range. If you love matching luggage, sets are available too.
  • Chalet Air Beauty Cases: This takes transporting those all-important personal care items to a whole new level!

See how the different variants work with the retro theme at the official Delsey Luggage store over at amazon.co.uk now!

#2 – Delsey Belmont Plus Luggage – Modern and Shock Resistant

Belmont Luggage from DelseyBelmont Plus suitcases from Delsey have a hint of retro, combined with attractive curves and a range of vibrant colours.

They are made from polypropylene – which is measurably more shock resistant than polycarbonate when used for luggage. You’ll find the usual cabin / medium and large options, all of which are spinners with smart black telescoping handles.

Your colour options are Pink, Black, Blue, Metallic Blue, Purple (which looks a lot better than I expected), Faded Red (closer to orange), Yellow and Framboise, and Orange.

The inside of these Delsey suitcases is has some attention to detail that many brands completely miss. The patterned lining material is lovely. You get one zipped compartment, which arches around the curved top seamlessly. The other side has two elasticated straps, which go sideways compared to most suitcases, keeping any loose clothing well packed.

This range of Delsey Luggage is built to last for years – check out the different size and colour combinations for yourself now – over at the official Delsey amazon.co.uk store.

#3 – Popular Delsey Soft Shell Luggage: The Helium DLX Spinners

Delsey Luggage the Helium DLXFans of soft-shell luggage don’t need to miss out on the French styling of Delsey cases.

The Helium DLX soft-shell cases from Delsey are beautifully designed, and they expand for extra capacity tool. The closest I can think of from other brands would be the best-selling Base Boost from Samsonite.

What is different with the style is panelling, giving a unique look which maintains the standard proportions while providing a distinctive overall look. There are some hidden extras with the Helium DLX suitcases. The lining can be removed and washed, and you get a removable toiletry bag too.

On the outside you get the build quality which made Delsey Luggage such a famous brand. There are spinner wheels, a telescoping handle, front pocket, and lock with the TSA override for USA travel.

Colour options are the standard black, or you can opt for Moka (coffee coloured).

The details are worth seeing (I love the contrasting inside zips on the Moka version).

Check the pricing and impressive close-ups now, on this Helium DLX spinner page at the official Delsey amazon store!

#4 – Delsey Metallic Hard-Shell Luggage: The Helium AERO

Helium Aero metallic finish cases from DelseyIt is hard to add subtle retro styling touches to a full-on modern metallic suitcase design – but Delsey have managed it brilliantly with their Helium AERO range.

They have a ridged front with vertical lines, and curved line at the sides. The shining metallic cover will immediately stand out at the airport carousel. My pick is the Carbon Grey design. You might prefer the Midnight Blue, Peony (red) or the vibrant Rose version. Helium AERO cases are spinners, with a side-mounted combination lock.

If you are wondering about the German in the title at Amazon, it translates as ‘Rigid, large-capacity suitcase.’

Inside is the standard closed / open compartment. There is a single elasticated luggage strap on the open side.

These Delsey Paris cases are stunning – though experience has taught me that the high-shine cases get scuffed and scraped faster than regular hard-shell luggage.

See which of the metallic colours you like best now – at the official Helium AERO page at the Delsey Paris amazon.co.uk store!

#5 – Delsey Moncey Hard Shell: Added Security and Strength

Moncey Cases from Delsey ParisInstead of the usual combination lock that grips the zip-heads, Moncey luggage from Delsey uses a centralised frame lock – along with two extra side locks.

You get that all-important TSA override for US travel, along with the peace of mind that your case is that much harder than everyone else’s for casual thieves to break into.

These cases are quirky, yet stylish – and come in a much wider range of colours than the other Delsey Luggage ranges. Here is the full list:

  • Anthracite
  • Black
  • Blue
  • Dark Beige
  • Grey
  • Light Blue
  • Meridian Green
  • Red
  • Red Star
  • Angora
  • Terracotta

The squat shaped textured polypropylene shell and quirky curves combine wonderfully well – you’ll know right away if the Moncey cases are a must-have for you! The usual sizes are available, with the addition of an XL for this range. though not every size is available in every colour at the time of writing.

Inside, the closed side has a mesh zipped cover – which lets you see what is inside. Opposite this, you get an open side with adjustable elasticated straps.

Check out the impressive range of colours for the Moncey cases now – over at the official Delsey amazon.co.uk store!

#6 – Delsey Cactus Slim Hard-Shell Luggage, With a Gradient

Two tone with a fade, the cactus casesWhile duo-tone cases are common enough, suitcases with a colour gradient are rare.

The Cactus from Delsey Paris is a high-gloss spinner with a unique design. It is darker blue at the top, fading to light blue at the bottom. This is hard to get right, though the design-team at Delsey luggage has done a wonderful job. The proportions of these cases (check-in and carry-on) are also worth noting. They are slim, in a powerful yet elegant way, and will immediately make them stand out at the airport.

Small touches include orange flares on the spinner wheels, plus vividly contrasting interior with bright orange lining.

It would be wonderful to see the range of colours expanded for the Cactus luggage range.

See the close-ups now (including the vivid inside) on this page at the official Delsey UK store at amazon.

#7 – Segur 2.0 Hard-Shell Suitcases from Delsey Luggage

Segur cases from Delsey- ParisFor anyone looking for Delsey luggage quality without going retro, brash, or too vivid – the Segur hard-shell suitcases are perfect.

This design has horizontal lines and a slim, tall profile compared to the width. It feels like the Clifton Suitcases from British brand Antler, only with narrower lines. You get a wide choice of colours, along with the three regular size combinations. While the Segur cases have a metallic sheen, they are not high gloss. This is great for anyone concerned about scratches and scrapes.

Here are the colour combinations:

  • Black
  • Grey
  • Khaki
  • Lilac
  • Red
  • Blue

Segur 2.0 cases have all the quality features you’d expect from Delsey Paris luggage. This list includes spinner wheels, a telescoping handle, TSA security lock, zipped inside (I loved the contrasting zip), and elasticated strap on the open compartment side.

Elegant, understates and high quality – check out the Segur 2.0 range at the official Delsey store at amazon.co.uk now!

About the Brand: Delsey Paris Has 75 Years of History

Delsey go all the way back to 1946. They started as two separate companies, which made leather cases (which were the main option at the time). In fact, the Delsey name comes from the first three letters of each of the two companies. They are proud to offer elegance and the know-how of the French – something which you can still see in their stylish and fashionable designs today.

The ‘Rising Sun’ Delsey logo is designed to be a symbol of hope and renewal for travellers.

Every new product range that Delsey come up with in their luggage manages to be elegant and robust at the same time. Few companies survive as long as Delsey – let alone with continued innovation and growth.

Features List: What to Look for When Choosing Delsey Luggage (and which line fits best for you)

A great shortcut to choosing the right suitcase from the wide range of styles and builds that Delsey luggage offer is to go ‘features first.’ By understanding the features, you can zoom in on what is the most important to you – and choose from there.

Cover (hard vs soft):

Both cover styles have benefits, and both works perfectly for travel. Soft shell cases like the Helium DLX are light, expandable and have front pockets – which you won’t find on hard shell cases. The hard-shell options range from the elegant Chalet Air 2.0 to the shiny Helium AERO. These are wipe-clean, tough cases which keep all your possessions protected.

Material:

Hard shell cases from Delsey are made from Polycarbonate, or the newer lightweight polypropylene. The finish of the suitcase material makes a difference too. High gloss / metallic finishes like those on the Cactus or AERO cases look stunning. They are also prone to scratches and scuffs during transport. Going for a matte finish, especially a textured one, will protect against those elements.

Spinner Wheels:

All Delsey check-in and hand luggage featured on this page comes with spinner wheels. You can rotate your case 360-degrees, pull it, or push it around the airport as needed. Beauty cases, backpacks, and other accessories from Delsey won’t have them of course. I looked at 100’s of comments from buyers and will confidently state that spinner wheels on Delsey cases are super-tough.

Spinner Wheels

Telescoping Handle:

There are big differences in the handles, which many buyers overlook. Make sure that your handle fits snuggly into the top of your case, that it has different height settings – and that the design fits with the rest of the case. Delsey get this right, though if you check the cheaper luggage brands, you’ll find some glaring errors.

Inside Features:

Most people focus on the outside, though there are important features on the inside of Delsey suitcases which may well make the difference. Hard-shell cases have a standard one-open / one closed compartment inside. The open one needs elasticated straps. On the Belmont Plus cases, there are dual straps. The close part should have a zipped lid, this can have mesh, extra pockets – or just an excellent design.

Inside View Helium DLXSecurity Features:

Deterring casual thefts is the key factor when it comes to luggage security. You’ll find three-digit combination locks on all the Delsey cases featured here. Most simply grip the heads of your zips. Look for a TSA override key. This lets the US customs / security people open your case. It is needed as they will break open any case without one if they do decide to take a look. Advanced security can be found on the Moncey range featured above.

Modern vs Retro Styling:

Now we get into personal tastes. This is important. And let’s be honest, a major factor in your decision. My view is this, if you let practicality go too far, you’ll regret it. A suitcase set that you feel proud to pick up from the airport carousel will really make a difference to your holiday. Whether its soft-shell vs hard, colour options or retro vs modern – go with a suitcase you love!

Delsey Luggage: Frequently Asked Questions

Do Delsey Paris Suitcases Come with Free Delivery?

Yes, when you buy Delsey luggage from their official Amazon.co.uk store, delivery is free. At the time of writing this guide, free delivery takes a week. You will have the option to pay for faster delivery when you check out.

Does Delsey Luggage Have a Warranty? What Does this Cover?

Yes, you get a 10-year warranty with many models, and 2 or 5-year warranties cover the rest. You need to activate your warranty online (instructions are provided with your purchase). Delsey Paris cover you for defective parts. If anything goes wrong with them that can be attributed to a manufacturing defect or fault, you are covered. Your suitcase will frequently be replaced. As with all luggage brands, you are not covered for accidents like dropping your case or burning it.

Are Delsey Hand-Luggage Models Within Airline Rules?

Yes, with the caveat that you are flying with a major airline and not an ultra-low cost one. 55cm is the cut-off point for all airlines with hand-luggage, and you should check with your carrier that this is acceptable before you head to the airport.

What Makes Delsey Luggage Different?

Three things make Delsey stand out from the crowded landscape of luggage brands. The biggest factor is the style, which is a unique mix of modern and retro. You get hints of a romantic, bygone era of travel, with modern lines and fashionable hues. Secondly, the interiors enjoy the same eye for detail and style as the exteriors… none of that boring grey nylon lining that most suitcases make do with. Finally, the warranty is up to 10 years long. Whether you end up claiming or not (let’s hope not!), this shows a lot of confidence in the build quality from Delsey.

Are Delsey Cases Good Value?

Yes, these are mid-priced cases in a competitive market. When you compare the build quality with cheaper brands, you’ll see that Delsey cases will stay looking good way after than unknown brand has started to get tatty. On a year-over-year basis, they are excellent value. Add to this that stylish luggage that you are proud to take off the airport carousel is worth spending a few more pounds on!

Can I Buy a Matching Set of Delsey Luggage?

Yes, you’ll save money buying Delsey luggage in sets when compared to getting them individually.

Alternative Brands: What are The Key Options?

Delsey sit in the middle price range for suitcases. While this represents excellent value compared to other brands, it would be crazy not to see what else you could get for similar money.

My first alternative to Delsey is Samsonite. This iconic brand has smarter, more mainstream designs – and are super-high quality. Samsonite cases include the ‘wow-factor’ lightness of the Lite-Shock Spinners, or more conservative designs like the Spark SNG hard-shell cases. My (super) detailed guide to Samsonite Luggage covers all the key options.

Antler is a British brand and have an even longer history than Delsey does. They recently revamped their entire range – and the new models are selling fast. There are two hard-shell cases with a range of dark or pastel colours which are perfect for the style-conscious traveller. They are the Clifton and the Stamford ranges. Antler cases are excellent quality. See all the different options now, on this page which compares the current Antler Luggage.
